Wouldn’t it be nice to get your life back?

You can. My name is Sarah Jenkins, MC, LPC and I created Dragonfly International Therapy. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified EMDR therapist. You don’t have to feel and experience life as you do right now. It can change. You can can find relief.

“Doesn’t it mean I’m crazy if I go to therapy?

You are not alone in asking that question; many people are concerned about that. No, it doesn’t mean that you are “crazy.” Actually, going to therapy just means you have feelings, experiences, or struggles right now that you want relief from. To want something different than what you are experiencing right now, that seems pretty normal to me. That isn’t crazy. Also, keep in mind that there are just as many reasons for why you are seeking counseling, as there are for why you may not want to.  You may have fears that going to see someone means that there is “something wrong with you.” You may have had a negative experience in counseling before. You might be uncomfortable sharing certain feelings, thoughts, or experiences. There may even be protective layers that have piled up over the years. It can take a lot to take that first step, start counseling, and explore those deep dark places. That’s not “crazy.” That’s courage.

Have you ever felt that your physical or emotional safety was threatened? Have you ever experienced abuse, assault, or violence?

If you have, it can still impact your life today.  Men and women often walk in my office, not thinking that their past traumas have an impact on them today. We then find out that they do. If you have experienced anything that felt traumatic because it threatened your sense of safety, it is important to have a therapist who understands its causes, symptoms, effects, and how to release the pain it creates. I do. Why do I know this? Because I have focused my career on helping women and men who have experienced assault, abuse, and violence. I have also supervised, managed, and taught trauma therapists.

You are not alone...

The numbers are staggering of women and men who have survived traumas such as sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, sexual and physical assault, let alone deaths, accidents, violence, catastrophic events, even traumatic loss like divorce.

“What happened is in the past. It doesn’t affect me now.”

You are right.  But, the past can be tricky. It can create other feelings, diagnoses, or physical ailments.

If you ever felt unsafe physically, sexually, or emotionally it can influence your current feelings, thoughts, relationships, and choices. The pain can just “show up” in the present, in other places of your life, when you least expect, or want it to. It gets “stored.” My goal is help you understand and release the thoughts, pain, and triggers that can still work on you, consciously or not.

“Of course I know its over. Sometimes it just feels like its not.”

Logically you know that it’s in the past. It’s behind you. Nevertheless, your feelings, thoughts, and body can disagree. For example, if you happen to have a history of trauma the emotions, memories, thoughts, and physical sensations just get “locked in” to your nervous system. It’s like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It can often look like something else, even the symptoms you are currently experiencing.

“Okay, but what if I am still unsure about counseling?”

Thats okay. Take your time. I know that it can be a tough decision to make.
